Star wars tribute film

Project brief:

For this project our main goal was to create a VFX based shot to understand the pipeline better, from pre production all the way to the final product. As most of my group members were interested in environment work, I thought the Star Wars franchise would be perfect for this as it has plenty of different kinds of environments to show off our skills. We took more inspiration from the latest few Star Wars movies such as Rouge One and Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

Sections I worked on

Kylo Ren ISD bridge

The scene is from Star Wars: The Force Awakens when the first order use the Starkiller base to shoot the planets across the system while Kylo Ren is watching from the bridge of the Star Destroyer.

Each element was made by me these being the modelling, texturing, lighting and compositing. However, the Kylo Ren model was not made by me and was sourced it from Sketchfab:

Darth Vader ISD bridge

This scene is from Rogue One when Darth Vader is trying to get back the stolen Death Star plans from the rebels. I changed up the scene slightly by adding in the Death Star in the background as it's more iconic than a rebel ship.

Darth Vader, the Death Star and the tie fighters were also sourced on Sketchfab but to get more detail from Darth Vader's cape I sculped over it in maya to make it feel more natural and realistic.

To create the Death Star shooting I animated emissive tubes coming out of the Death Star in the same fashion as the movies where they all meet at a point. Most of the lighting happening on the Death Star was achieved in Nuke.

To create a pulsing effect on the beam I masked a layer of noise in Nuke over the original layer to give it more velocity as all the beams move towards the point.
